At the beginning of the election season you’ll give a speech to your citizens. Every 10 years or so an election will be called. The combination of happiness and political favor is how you gain support. Starting out it’s almost always better to get the favor. upon completing a demand you’ll be rewarded with a choice between money or favor. These will usually be something like build a certain building, or gather so much of one resource. Certain buildings or edicts can raise a parties favor, but the main thing you’ll have to do for them is answer demands. Depending on the Era there will be a certain number of political parties that you’ll have to pay attention to. In addition to the happiness of your population you’ll also have to curry the favor of the political parties. You’ll start having to manage their happiness There are 8 different happiness’s that will need to be monitored. As your town grows so will your population. you’ll start with raw unrefined resources but don’t rely on those as a staple, you’ll eventually want to start exporting more advanced things. Regardless of Era you’ll want to make money, the best way to start is by exporting goods. The Era you play in will give you different buildings, and ways of acquiring resources, so as you are starting a game make sure you are aware of what the era you are playing in can provide for you. There are 4 major eras you play in Colonial, World Wars, Cold War, and Modern. From there it’s up to you to start growing. Building a military base owned by the other superpowers will prevent the invasion.A typical game of Tropico starts with your Palace, a few buildings for construction, delivery, and a handful of residential buildings. Often the foreign relations with one superpower can take turn for the worse even when you have no debt.
Be mindful of this, as maintaining bad relations with one superpower for too long will provoke them to invade your island, which will put an untimely end to your regime.
When your island enters debt, your relations with the foreign superpowers will begin to worsen rapidly. Building a Diplomatic Ministry will help you to improve your foreign relations and will grant you access to new edicts. Balancing your foreign relations between the US and the USSR can be hard but if you manage to get on their good side, you can receive a substantial amount of money in the form of foreign aid. Just the same an island cannot remain isolated from the rest of the world for long. Be careful though, as cheating will lower the respect of your citizens.Īs they say "no man is an island". If all else fails you can always make a "slight adjustment" to the ballots on the day of the election. You can issue various edicts such as "Food for the People" and "Mardi Gras" in order to gain an immediate boost to your citizens' respect. If you find yourself behind in the polls do not despair - there are still measures you can take to turn the situation around. You can issue the "Early Elections" edict in order to hold an election anytime you like, but be mindful that this will increase your citizens' democracy expectations and they will demand elections more often in the future. Refusing an election will drastically drop your citizens respect and may even trigger an uprising. You can issue personal actions from the citizen's info-panel in order to gain an unhappy leader's favor or take more drastic measures and remove the problem altogether.Īny good dictator knows that elections are a necessary evil. The Communists and Religious factions for example will usually have more supporters than the Environmentalists and Intellectuals faction. Each faction will have its own demands and will comprise of a different part of your population.
The majority of your citizens will be affiliated to one or more of the different island factions and will be affected by that faction's overall respect towards you.
